A lot of it depends on how they were geared and how you drive them.</p>

<p><b>A: </b>A women that appreciates old school cars is cool, likes one of the the things that most guys appreciate. She has class and was probably taught a few things about cars and men, not a &#8220;Barbie&#8221; type.  She probably won&#8217;t send you to the poor house being high maintenance. Probably won&#8217;t get caught up chasing the Joneses. She knows what she likes, is fun to be with, and is self confident. </p>
<p>Too bad, I am already married.</p>
<p><b>Q: </b>Can anyone tell me if there are any old school cars that are 6 cyilender engines?<br />Like I know some Chevy Nova&#8217;s and Ford Mustang&#8217;s, but is there any more?</p>
<p><b>A: </b>almost every manufacturer made 6 cyl.</p>
<p><b>Q: </b>Do the old school cars run in diesel?<br />especially the muscle cars? I&#8217;m planning to buy one</p>
<p><b>A: </b>No, muscle cars ran on high octane gasoline. In fact, you would be hard pressed to find high enough octane gasoline to run a real muscle car without it &#8220;pinging&#8221;. The old school muscle cars had a much higher compression ratio and the lower octane gasoline would &#8220;ping&#8221; or ignite before it was supposed to. Before you buy a muscle car, find out what octane rating is recommended for it and make sure it is available in your area.</p>
<p>For those taking notes: The term &#8220;pinging&#8221; is used by most everyone who works on cars, it is not &#8220;a high school term&#8221;. It is used by mechanics who have worked on cars for 20 years and it is used by 20 year olds. A 1965 Chevrolet 327 cid with 350 horse power had 11 to 1 compression ratio and ran best on gasoline with about 120 octane rating, which was available at Sunoco gas stations in the 60&#8217;s&#8230; I don&#8217;t think it is available at your local gas station now. A brand new Chevrolet &#8220;crate engine&#8221; has 9.1 to 1 compression ratio and has 350 cid and 330 horse power. The higher compression ratio made it possible for the engine to make more than one horse power per cubic inch. When the compression ration went down, it was no longer common for an engine to make more than one horse power per cubic inch. This space was supposed to answer the question if muscle cars ran on diesel, which I answered and gave a very brief note to find out what octane rating was needed for the particular car to be purchased and to find out if the gasoline was available in the area. If someone wants to answer a question, answer the question without trying to attack another answer, especially if the former answer is correct.</p>
<p>P.S. I set the World Drag Racing Record for E/Stock Formula 2 in my 1965 Chevelle Malibu SS with a 327/350.</p>

<p><b>A: </b>My experience has been that it&#8217;s easier to shift in the older cars.  Bigger engines meant more torque, and combined with low ratio 3 or 4 speed transmissions, made for a much larger margin of error when trying to shift.<br />
Double clutching wasn&#8217;t necessary, but you could use it if you missed your first shift.  Just rev the engine, let out the clutch slowly, and climb into second gear.<br />
A much funner thing to do, especially if you were driving someone else&#8217;s car, was to speed shift.  No clutch, just shift by ear.  At certain RPM&#8217;s, the transmission can be shifted without engaging the clutch.  Find that point, and you could shift through all the gears and be flying in no time.  Miss the shift at speed, and you would destroy the transmission instantly.  Either way, it was always good for an adrenaline rush.</p>

<p><b>A: </b>You wont find a GT 500 but that doesn&#8217;t mean you cant find a good deal on a cool car that will lend itself to modification. However you need to narrow your search to what you like, Chevy, ford, Pontiac&#8230;so on, you can find many good deals if your are patient. You can find mid 70s to late 80s Camaros for a good price and these cars (although smog regulated) can be modified allot. If you don&#8217;t mind four doors you can find cars that are in nice shape and V8s for fair prices too&#8230;don&#8217;t be narrow minded when it comes to a search, you wont find a ready to run GT500 or any other &#8220;muscle car&#8221; for 4 grand  but you can find a used 66 mustang coupe with a small V8 or straight 6 for 4-5 grand if you look in the right places&#8230;..I recommend looking on eBay motors, under collector cars or Traderonline.com, there are tons of cars out there ripe for the picking&#8230;you just have to be creative.</p>

<p><b>A: </b>In 1964 factory installation was a L6, 144.3 &#8211; 170.0 &#8211; 200.0 &#8211; and V8, 260.0, 116 hp.</p>

<p><b>A: </b>there should be a casting number on it starting with C4  for 64 or C5 for 65, also look at the road draft tube in the rear, early ones had it. but there were some very early 289&#8217;s that will look the same, so you can&#8217;t really tell&#8230;</p>
<p>oh, I almost forgot the easiest, 4 barrels are all 289, any 260 will be a 2 barrel.. and a 2 barrel 289 will be a C5 at least for Mustangs..not 100% for sure about Falcons..</p>
<p><b>Q: </b>How much should I ask for both doors from a 1964 Ford Falcon 2dr Hardtop?<br />These are very solid straight doors, freshly painted, not professional, I see one run for sure, thanx for the input!</p>
<p><b>A: </b>Depends on how fast you want to sell them.  Freshly painted means nothing since they&#8217;ll need to be repainted anyway to match whatever car they&#8217;ll be mounted to.  You would have been better off not having them painted, gives the buyer a look at the original condition and verify no dents have been filled.  $200 to $300 is reasonable, anything higher will take longer to sell.  If you&#8217;re using free ads then time isn&#8217;t an issue.</p>
<p><b>Q: </b>looking to purchase a 1964 ford falcon 6 cylinder engine?<br />1964 falcon convert able located in ca.  the present engine has a cracked block and cannot be rebuilt.  i have searched everywhere&#8230;engine must run, will consider shipping from anywhere in u.s.</p>
<p><b>A: </b>If I were you&#8230; I&#8217;d make sure the block is truly unusable. Any cylinder wall that&#8217;s cracked can usually be bored out and sleeved. That&#8217;s a normal fix. However, cracked water jackets not associated with the cylinder wall are another story&#8230; etc-etc-etc. If you don&#8217;t know what&#8217;s what, get the opinion of a long standing automotive machine shop in your area. They will tell you whether or not a block can be sleeved or if it&#8217;s really shot. There are also a few motor welding companies across the country that are very successful with certain repairs too&#8230; but repairs of this nature (oven brazing and cast iron welding) are usually expensive thus are reserved for expensive and rare blocks. If your car is a numbers matching car&#8230; you might choose to look into doing what it takes to save the block though. I would. If worse comes to worst, turn the block into a coffee table. After you fully degrease and paint it. Why? Because you never know what the future holds for repairs&#8230; and some day, your block might be able to be saved. They&#8217;re doing amazing things with lasers these days&#8230; including in the realm of welding.</p>
<p>OK, you didn&#8217;t say what engine you have&#8230; but if it&#8217;s a stock engine it should be a 144 or 170 unless someone transplanted in a 200, 250, 240 or 300. I doubt you have a 250, 240 or 300 though&#8230; but I couldn&#8217;t rule it out either so I decided to bring them up. For a stock engine, either the 144 or 170 isn&#8217;t that good of an engine. By design they&#8217;re weaker than later inlines&#8230; but they can be hopped up a little bit to get a bit more HP out of them. Finding one won&#8217;t be easy&#8230; but more on that later.</p>
<p>In case you have a 200, it&#8217;ll be better than the 144 or 170 due to it being a better design than the others. You can also hop it up more&#8230; in fact, overall, more speed parts are available for the 200 than the other engines. Can a 200 really be hopped up? Sure. You can DOUBLE the HP if you want to spend the money. It has 7 main bearings (stout block, smooth operation) and quite a few speed parts available for it: header sets, bolt on intakes (after you machine the head to allow them to be bolted on), etc-etc-etc. You can actually do a lot with them if you want to.</p>
<p>As for the others I listed, the best of the bunch is the 300. The 250 is an enlarged 200 for the most part&#8230; and that&#8217;s OK&#8230; but the 300 is the pinnacle. It is Ford&#8217;s longest running engine. Ford turned it into an EFI engine back in 1987 and there are lots of parts available for it. In fact, you can get 400 HP or more out of it if you want to&#8230; reliable HP too. The 240 came before the 300&#8230; and the block is the same. The crank for the 300 is different (longer stroke) and the 240 head gives higher compression but the engines for the most part use the same parts and are interchangeable.</p>
<p>Let&#8217;s look at your car. If you want to remain stock, by all means&#8230; seek out a 144 or 170. Get a serviceable block rebuilt to specs, install it and enjoy your car. What would I do? Seriously look at installing a modern 302. Why? For the power gain &#038; economy, it&#8217;ll be worth it. Far more HP and far better mileage. It will weigh more than a stock 6 but you can easily overcome that by beefing up the suspension of the car. The good news? Plenty of parts are available to swap in this engine. The downside? You&#8217;ll probably have to swap the trans out too&#8230; but again, to me it would be worth it. Your car, properly modified, will be so much more enjoyable to drive&#8230; good grief. I can almost feel a 302 backed by a T5 at my fingertips. Anyway, that&#8217;s just an idea.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s the &#8220;more&#8221; I promised. What to do about getting a stock engine? You live in California. Lucky you. Tons of parts suppliers in CA. If I were you, I&#8217;d contact all the suppliers I could find near you, in state or on the west coast. Also check these:</p>

<p>What you&#8217;re looking for is an outfit that has REAL cars as opposed to just brand new parts. They&#8217;ll most likely have some spare engines laying around that you could purchase. NW Falcon would be a good bet. I will also say&#8230; that you should consult your local parts suppliers. Old parts yards often have old parts laying around. Be sure to exhaust every local business first&#8230; then move farther away as needed. Also pay attention to anyone that deals with other Fords such as the Econoline, Fairlane, Ranchero, Comet, etc. Why? Those cars also used the 144 &#038; 170 in the early 60s. Best wishes!</p>

<p><b>A: </b>The wiring will be essentially the same on the V8 vs. the V6. Alternator, ignition and so fourth don&#8217;t change.<br />
Be glad it&#8217;s a 1964 &#8211; this wiring is relatively simple compared to the newer electronic vehicles.<br />

You can MAYBE buy all the parts to make a proper conversion to a V8 since upgrading the suspension, brakes and cooling is also required but you will need to do ALL the work yourself since you have no more money.  </p>

<p><b>A: </b>Well you are asking a question about dollars and sense. It doesn&#8217;t make sense to spend all your dollars if you don&#8217;t have to, am I right? Well then, keeping that in mind, I will tell you that there are two way&#8217;s you can paint a car. There is the right way, obviously, and the wrong way, also obvious. The right way is to get the car looking like Ford actually painted it that color back in 1968. A correct and true color change will include the entire engine bay, the door jams, the interior and the the entire underside. The wrong way to paint it would be to cut corners just to save money. This includes NOT removing all trim/windows/lights/engine/trans./suspension components/brake lines/fuel lines/etc. The right way to &#8220;color change&#8221; a vehicle will easily cost you upwards of $10,000 Canadian. The wrong way can leave you with a fatter wallet but a smaller ego. The wrong way can still cost 1,2,3 maybe even $4,000 if you are a sucker. My suggestion, if you truly want to do this, is to entirely dismantle the whole car on your own, put it on a rotiserrie, have it towed to a shop that does acid dipping and sand blasting and then take it to whomever is painting it for you. This will allow them(the painter) to do their work and not worry about prep./overspray/etc.</p>
<p>A real color change is an expensive, time consuming process. I hope I have helped, good luck!</p>

The car looks great in a pic but its been sitting in a shed since 1982 and had a cheap enamel paint job done around 1980. the only rust is a lil in the shock towers and the rear right frame rail</p>

<p><b>A: </b>The trunk lids are completely different, the fastback&#8217;s is smaller than the coupes. However the doors will fit just fine, if I remember correctly it&#8217;s only the glass that is different so you&#8217;ll need to replace the door glass.</p>

<p><b>A: </b>Your local parts house will have a repair manual and it will have some info on window repair. </p>
<p>Some &#8220;simple&#8221; projects can seem daunting, especially when it comes to glass. For some reason, nearly everyone is afraid of breaking glass, so they will either avoid working around it or go about doing things the hard way. Let&#8217;s look at this side window assembly and see how to remove the glass in the most efficient manner. </p>
<p>A typical car door window is held in place by the bottom track and a full &#8211; or partial &#8211; chrome-plated channel that frames it. The glass itself is sandwiched into these metal components with a rubber/fiber window channel material and some sort of sealing compound. In modern (post 1970)cars the sealing compound is probably a caulk-like material while in older cars the compound was a form of window putty. In either case the material solidifies over time and can be very hard to remove, so separating the window from the frame requires a little imagination. </p>
<p>In all cases you will be able to separate the top part of the window frame from the bottom channel. In the case of this T-Bird window there are three screws at the back end that hold the chrome channel to the bottom frame. We had to drill out one of them, but suffice to say that you should be able to remove the screws in some relatively easy way. </p>
<p>In all probability the channel is going to stick to the glass, as it did on the subject window. We softened the old, dried putty in the channel by soaking the window in the laundry tub overnight. Soapy water did the trick and we were able to gently remove the chrome channel from the window without bending anything. Tip: When prying against glass always use a wooden spatula or wrap duct tape around screwdriver blades to prevent chipping! </p>
<p>The bottom of the window is also held in the channel with fiber lining and putty, but this T-Bird window had been sealed with more modern materials sometime in the past 20-30 years. Soaking did nothing to soften the grip on the window, so in cases like this we recommend inserting a thin blade between the glass and lining and cutting along its length to free the glass from the channel. You have to take time doing this. Cut as deeply as possible on each pass until you get to the bottom. It is only when you can cut to the bottom on both sides of the glass that you can reliably pry the channel off. If you don&#8217;t do this you stand a good chance of bending the channel or breaking the glass. </p>

<p><b>A: </b>You are going to need a manual trans, bellhousing, clutch disk, pressure plate, throwout bearing, pilot bearing, manual shifter and linkage, clutch pedal and linkage, manual nosecone on starter, and just basic hand tools.  I swapped out an automatic for a four speed in a &#8216;66 Stang.  It took me a full day and then some to make the swap.  My driveshaft worked without any mods, and so did my crossmember.</p>

<p><b>A: </b>your either not running the horn through the relay, or you have the relay wired wrong.get a schematic.you should get a 12 volt &#8211; a the wire. it just momentarily completes the ground side of the relay at the wheel.</p>

<p>  Coupes values are determined by the investment in them, but sell for less than.  Fastbacks bring full return on investment and maybe more.</p>
<p>you can list it local or on craigslist for a fast local sale or put it on Ebay to get top bid</p>
<p>without seeing it, I would guess $6000-7000 for a coupe and double that for a fastback.</p>

<p><b>A: </b>Both cars are UNI-BODY construction so you can not interchange the frames BUT you can upgrade the 67 with COMPONENTS from the Fox Body. You could bolt the 5.0 which = 302 CI and use the front suspension and braking system. You could use the rear axle and trans also, it would take a bit to do but if you have a donor car you could swap a lot over, these kind of conversions are done all the time. Check with a Mustang restoration shop they have conversion kits for these.</p>

Drain and remove radiator.<br />
I pull the engine without the transmission but putting it back in requires a little patience.  Use jack stand to support transmission.<br />
Disconnect everything from engine.<br />
Lift with hoist, I use the chain bolted to the manifold bolt using longer bolts.<br />
Lift engine out and install on engine stand.<br />
Reverse above to install.</p>

<p><b>A: </b>I am not sure how close you are to the Arizona (or Nevada) state line but there is a few places there that specialize in camaros and the best part about Arizona and Nevada is very little moisture in the air (so very little rust).  So if you are willing to travel for the vehicle you might be able to find one in better condition.  Just a suggestion.  Good luck on finding your project.</p>

<p><b>A: </b>You sound completely spoiled! When I turned 18, my parents bought me an 8 year old mini truck that was beat to hell and it wouldn&#8217;t go into third gear, so I had to rev up the RPMs real high and speed shift from second to fourth. It had no interior, so my parents bought this bright red indoor outdoor carpeting and they glued it to the floor and the door panels. The inside of my truck basically looked like a billard table. They paid five hundred bucks for my truck and I didn&#8217;t even know how to drive a stick. My friend and I took down some chains that were blocking off  the front of The Angels Stadium in Aneheim California and we drove around the empty parking lot and he taught me how to shift. I tried to help my daughter with money for a car, but she kept picking lemons and they would break down, so she ended up taking the bus everywhere for a couple years. You don&#8217;t deserve a gift like a totally rebuilt, classic 68 Camaro. Your Dad should buy you a beater or hand you a bus pass and teach you to appreciate what you&#8217;ve got</p>

I want to strip it, get new interior and put everything new. New stereo, power locks and windows, etc.</p>
<p><b>A: </b>That&#8217;s an open ended question and depends on the amount of time and money you&#8217;re willing to commit as well as the level of interest you can sustain over the long haul.  I&#8217;ve done restorations that dragged on for two years and can just suck the joy out of your life, no matter how cool the car may be and how grand your vision (I eventually finished my big one, a highly modified 1965 Corvair, that I autocrossed, ran time trials at Lime Rock with and drove daily for another 4 years until it just rusted away (in the northeast, you just can&#8217;t preserve a car that gets normal use).  Still have the engine, with 250,000 miles on it, waiting for another body.    </p>
<p>The 1968 Camaro has always been one of my favorites (they scrapped the &#8216;67 vent windows, didn&#8217;t add the &#8216;69 bulges, and it can accomodate any engine/trans combo).  If it&#8217;s a rust-free car (dream on) from the southwest, then it&#8217;s not so bad.  The depth of the corrosion will be the killer, and ultimately the factor that determines whether the project is worthwhile.  Don&#8217;t get caught up in the details like stereo and power windows until you&#8217;re sure the structure is solid, otherwise it&#8217;s just lipstick on a pig.  You&#8217;ve also got to decide whether it&#8217;s worth the investment.  A 307 with a powerglide isn&#8217;t worth the effort.  A big block, or Z-28 302 definitely would be a better place to start.  A 327 is borderline.  If the engine&#8217;s not original, say a 350, it loses points unless it&#8217;s something hot (LT-1) that hasn&#8217;t been abused).  Keep in mind that the added weight of the big block will adversely affect the handling.  If you&#8217;re looking for something to enjoy in driving that requires more than just traveling in a straight line, the small block is preferable. </p>
<p>One little thing that&#8217;s gonna drive you crazy is headlights.  The RS package came with hideway headlights, and the motors that flip the covers had a lot of issues.</p>
<p>Basic priorities: </p>
<p>1. original as possible<br />
2. as rust free as possible<br />
3. good engine/trans combination</p>
<p>Don&#8217;t let a shiny new paint job and set of hot wheels and tires influence you too much.  That&#8217;s easy stuff to deal with towards the end.  As I said, focus on the structure and powertrain to begin with.  Keep in maind that regardless of what you go with, you&#8217;ll always have to deal with the fact that 1968 engines were designed to run on higher octane (leaded) gas than is available today.  Without fuel additives or retarding the ignition timing you&#8217;ll be hearing a lot of self-destructive pinging.   </p>

<p><b>A: </b>sand it down&#8230;get to the holes and pits.  then if you have access to lead body bars that is the best way to repair it.  If not&#8230;then ugggg&#8230;bondo.  you can also get some sheet metal and cut the bad parts out and weld the new stuff in.  since it&#8217;s a classic I&#8217;d suggest have a reputable body shop do the work.  It will cost you but it will be well worth it.</p>

<p><b>A: </b>The better under dash ventilation system which meant no vent windows is a good one for &#8216;68 compared to the first year &#8216;67.<br />
The taillights are different. The front grill and parking lights are different but i can never remember which is which. I apologize. Between the hidden headlights and stuff they had a few different configurations those 2 years. </p>
<p>But,<br />
The &#8216;67 had a Z/28 option that you could order. It was literally the letter code on the ordering form! But they didn&#8217;t call the car a Z/28.<br />
Later on, Chevy marketing thought the &#8216;67 option code Z/28 had a cool ring to it&#8230;so in &#8216;68 if you ordered that code you got emblems on the car stating is was in fact a Z/28! Chevy made the same DZ-302 Z/28 engine from &#8216;67 to &#8216;69.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s the most knowledge,<br />
The BIGGEST difference between a &#8216;67 and a &#8216;68 Camaro is more than just Camaro. It effected every car sold in the united states in 1968.<br />
In 1968, the Federal Government made it mandatory for all car&#8217;s sold in the United States to have SIDE MARKER LIGHTS!<br />
Those little marker lights on the side of the front fender and rear quarter are 1968 to present day for every car! Therefore, the 1967 Camaro has NO marker lights at all on the side but the &#8216;68 to present day does!<br />
No car before &#8216;68 did.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ll throw this in,&#8230;.1986 was the first year the government made the rear, middle, &#8216;3rd brake light&#8217; mandatory!<br />
That may not interest you&#8230;until you find yourself looking at mid &#8217;80&#8217;s IROC Camaro&#8217;s or Monte Carlo SS&#8217;s or Vette&#8217;s or T/A&#8217;s or etc. etc.</p>

<p>The engine along will run you between $7,000 and 12,000 depending on which 502 crate you want. </p>
<p>Then a transmission to handle that will run you around $1500 for 3 speed auto, around $3,000 if you want a 5 or 6 speed man </p>
<p>Rear end will neeed to be re worked at about $1000</p>
<p>In a uni body car like the camaro with that much torque you would need sub frame connetors and a min of a 6 point roll bar to keep from twisting car up. Thats about $300 in parts but if you get someone to weld the roll bar in thats another $500 in labor min. </p>
<p>Then to hook that kinda power you would need good aftermarket suspension at the price of around $1500 </p>
<p>All of this is on top of the norm resto parts and prices for the interior, body, etc whick will run around $10,000 </p>
<p>So 8,000 for car, $10,000 for gen resto, then $15,000 for your performance mods </p>
<p>So around $33,000  and thats with you doing most of all the labor</p>

<p><b>A: </b>Why not just fill it up with fresh, hi-test gas? That would allow you to run all the old stuff out safely. If the car is &#8220;running&#8221; as you say, it won&#8217;t hurt it to do that. Just drive it &#8220;nice&#8221; till all the gas mix is gone.</p>
<p><b>Q: </b>Is it possible to put airbags in a 1968 Camaro?<br />Just wondering if you can do that.</p>
<p><b>A: </b>It depends if you&#8217;re talking about supplemental inflatable restraints or air ride suspension.  There are several companies that make air ride kits for first gen Camaro&#8217;s, so that ones easy.  If you are talking about supplemental inflatable restraints then it would be possible I guess, but extremely impractical.  The biggest problem wouldn&#8217;t even be putting in a air bag equipped steering column or the passenger dash, it would be getting the front impact sensors to work correctly in a car that has a steel bumper, no impact absorbing material behind the bumper, no crumple zone, etc.  Cars with airbags also have &#8220;5 mph&#8221; front bumpers for a reason.  If you were to install airbag impact sensors in the front of a &#8216;68 Camaro, the airbags could and likely would deploy at the slightest impact, like bumping a parking block.  Airbags are also computer controlled.  The impact sensors send signal to the ECM, which sends signal to the airbags themselves to deploy, so you&#8217;d also have to find an ECM compatible with whatever airbags you used and have everything except for the airbag control flashed out.  Monetarily it would be a no win proposition.  You&#8217;d be looking at major money to do it on the front side and also major devaluation of the car on the back side.</p>

<p>You would need to pay a custom car shop several thousand dollars.  Everything would need to be custom fabricated.  Nothing off the shelf.  Seems there isn&#8217;t much market for right hand drive conversion kits here for 40 year old cars.</p>
<p>I would say $20,000 minimum to pay a custom car shop to do this for you.</p>

<p><b>A: </b>I will almost guarantee you that you fried the alternator at least, why it smoked inside the car I don&#8217;t know but that doesn&#8217;t sound good.</p>

<p><b>A: </b>First thing to do is to pull the spark plugs out and get some oil into the cylinder. Spray or pump some oil in each cylinder before you try to rotate the motor. You should put a little in for a couple of days, so that you can make sure the rings don&#8217;t seize. Then I would rotate it by hand so that you can feel if it is right.  Fill the crank case too before you try to turn it. Leave the plugs out too so that it can push out the oil and doesn&#8217;t try to squeeze it if you put too much in.  Sounds like fun.  Do the work it needs before you get it running because once it is running you will be turning the wheel and not a wrench.</p>

It would have a low profile Aero hood scoop which would feed the monster of an engine a 514. <p><b>A: </b>I think your in for a difficult transition but i would go with the challenger they are both decent looking outside but  the ford is very cheep inside and from what Ive see the challenger looks like it will have at least a decent interior. the 450Hp only helps its case, plus everyone and there mother doesn&#8217;t own one. Mustang&#8217;s are a dime a dozen.</p>

The &#8216;09 will come out with the Hemi engine as well as the 3.5 litre V6.  There are also plans for a convertible version as well as 4.0 litre engine ( the new Phoenix motor replacing the current 3.5 L V6 ) coming out around 2010 or 2011</p>

Well, the SE has a 3.5L V8 with 250hp, the R/T and SRT8 have larger V8 engines and they have a few different features. If you really want a Challenger and can deal with a little less power, the SE was designed for you.</p>

<p>The standard engine in the R/T was the 383 Magnum. Optional was the 440-4, 440 Six Pack, and 426 Hemi. The 340 was not available on the R/T, no matter what anyone tells you &#8211; they&#8217;re wrong.</p>
<p>The base Challenger could be had with the Slant 6 or the 318 standard. From there, you could get the 383-2 and the 383-4 (almost like an R/T incognito). The 340 also was available on the base Challenger (hardtop and ragtop only) as the 340 Performance Package . . . and this is where the T/A comes in.</p>
<p>As Dodge decided to offer the 340 package on the base Challenger, it only makes sense that the Challenger T/A package was offered on the base Challenger. This package &#8211; only available on the hardtop &#8211; came with a fiberglass hood similar to the 1969 A12 Super Bees and Road Runners, special striping, side-exit exhaust (except in CA, I believe), a special spoiler package, and a 340 engine with Six Pack carburetors, among other heavy-duty equipment. This model was produced to certify certain modifications legal for Trans-Am racing (get it? T/A? But Pontiac already dibs for the name). The front and rear tires were of different sizes &#8211; very unusual at the time &#8211; and was the best-handling Challenger of them all. Despite a 1971 advertisement showing the T/A would return, none were built.</p>
<p>Regarding your Mustang question, I&#8217;d say the CJ is equivalent to the Challenger&#8217;s Six Pack. Parts are much easier to find for the Mustang. The Boss 429 was practically hand-built, and in some ways it can&#8217;t be compared to the Challenger because of the modifications that were required for it to be built. However, bone-stock Boss 429 cars tended to disappoint road testers at the time because it wasn&#8217;t as fast as it looked (despite 13-second times, like a Hemi Challenger R/T). However, Boss 429s have been super-expensive for a very long time.</p>
<p>The 1972 Charger  . . . depends on the model. There was the R/T replacement called the Rallye which had a 400 standard and could have a 340 and 440 optional (about 5 or so Six Packs were built before it was cancelled on the first week). You could also get the 440 on the SE. This was the first year for the low-compression engines, so 1971s tend to be more desirable but the 1972 have their own appeal and can still be fast.</p>

<p>One additional detail, just went out and checked new ballast resistor (white porcelain on firewall) and it is extremely hot, I tried to crank car over for about thirty seconds. What does that mean?</p>

<p>If so, most likely the problem is in the madnetic pickup in the distributor. If not, pull the distributor out and see if the gear on the shaft is broken. </p>
